Domestic Violence Offender Management Board (DVOMB)–approved domestic violence treatment in Colorado.
Colorado law provides for DV treatment programs for people involved with the criminal-justice system following domestic-violence offenses, including people on probation, parole, community corrections, or deferred judgment and sentence. Programs can include group counseling, individual counseling, outpatient treatment, or therapeutic-community treatment. Colorado's standards describe it as involving therapy, monitoring, and supervision, with the overall purpose of reducing abusive behavior and promoting the safety of victims and the community.
-
A DVOMB-approved evaluator gathers and reviews information about the person and the offense, then develops an assessment of treatment needs. The evaluation can include:
Review of the offense and relevant history
Domestic-violence risk assessment
Examination of patterns of behavior and factors associated with the offense
Assessment of risk factors and treatment needs
Screening for substance-use issues
Consideration of whether a mental-health assessment is appropriate
Review of information from the court, probation, previous evaluations, and other relevant sources
Development of treatment recommendations and goals
-
The evaluation is an assessment of a person's use of alcohol or drugs and whether it meets criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD).
If the evaluation determines that treatment is appropriate—or if treatment is specifically required by a court or supervising agency—the person may be referred to services such as:
Individual counseling
Group therapy
Substance-use education
Relapse-prevention work
Intensive outpatient treatment
Outpatient treatment
More intensive levels of care when clinically necessary
Alcohol/drug monitoring or testing when required
The treatment generally focuses on understanding substance-use patterns, addressing contributing factors, developing coping strategies, and reducing the likelihood of continued problematic use.
